Students Take the Lead in Cleaning Plataria Harbor: A Promise for a Cleaner Future

In an initiative led by Antipollution and the Igoumenitsa Port Authority, a successful cleanup of Plataria Harbor was carried out, with the participation of more than 50 secondary school students, accompanied by 10 teachers and the school principal. With the help of the diving team “Thetis,” the participants contributed to the removal of waste from both the seabed and the pier, emphasizing the importance of environmental awareness.

At the start of the event, it was declared that the students were the protagonists of the day. This initiative was described as the beginning of a series of actions, serving as an “apology” from previous generations for the environmental damage caused in the past, while at the same time acting as a promise to children for a cleaner and more sustainable future.

During the cleanup, the students were equipped with gloves, bags, and specialized tools to collect small plastics from the pier. The diving team retrieved a variety of waste from the seabed, including old tires, metal objects, and hazardous materials. The students actively participated in cleaning the pier, helping to preserve the natural landscape.

Gift bags were distributed to the students, which included an Antipollution-branded notebook for them to write down their ideas for a cleaner tomorrow. Along with the notebook, they were given a special pencil, which, once used, could be planted, as it contains a seed that will grow. Additionally, they received hats and t-shirts with the message “Cleaning Today, Protecting Tomorrow.” The school principal was presented with a laptop as a token of appreciation for their participation, while gifts were also given to the Port Authority administration.

This initiative marks the start of a broader effort to raise environmental awareness among the younger generation, inviting them to actively participate in protecting the environment and creating a cleaner, more sustainable future.
