November 24, 2023

Antipollution is deeply committed to actively supporting and facilitating the provision of comprehensive technical knowledge and training to marine professionals. Through our steadfast dedication, we aim to empower maritime experts with the essential skills and expertise required for their roles, contributing to enhanced safety, environmental protection, and overall excellence within the maritime industry.

After the highly successful seminar provided by Antipollution through the HELMEPA educational platform, for the second consecutive year, Antipollution actively supports the certified OPRC HNS / HAZMAT Course – Managers Level training (IMO model courses) hosted by the Athena Maritime Training Center, providing the equipment and personnel required for the specialized exercises demanded by the seminar regarding the safe handling of hazardous residues.

Statistics suggest that the frequency of fires emerging from containerized cargo is rising rapidly. On average there has been roughly one fire every two weeks. These types of casualties have a certain level of complexity that also involves specialised response teams to Hazardous & Noxious Substances (HNS).

Cargo related fires on board container ships have been the topic of frequent discussions in the industry in recent years. Large casualties like the MSC FLAMINIA, YANTIAN EXPRESS, MAERSK HONAM, EXPRESS PEARL and most recently the FREMANTLE HIGHWAY, are hitting the news regularly. There has been no shortage of smaller fires, near misses on-board and fires occurring in containers within terminal areas.

The IMO HNS Convention is the last piece in the puzzle needed to ensure that those who have suffered damage have access to a comprehensive and international liability and compensation regime. Managing and responding to maritime incidents involving hazardous and noxious substances (HNS), usually chemicals, is an important element of a responder’s or relevant stakeholder’s work.

For a second consecutive year, the accredited HNS / HazMat- HazWoPer Course will be held at Athena Maritime Training Center with the valuable support of ANTIPOLLUTION SA, between the 27th and 29th of November 2023.
