Refloating of MV ”Cabrera” stern was completed

October 22, 2017

The refloating of the aft part of the cargo ship “Cabrera” was successfully completed on Sunday 22nd of October 2017. The Cabrera during the early hours of 24 December 2016 due to bad weather conditions ran aground at the north coast of the island of Andros resulting to its sinking
The “Cabrera” was loaded with 3,500 mt of steel in its holds and also had 200 tons of bunkers. The ship sailed from the Port of Larymna in Greece for Finland.
Because of its sinking, a few dozens of light fuel leaked due to the heavy weather that was buttering the region of Cabanos, and a large part of this controlled quantity was spread to a wider area.
The antipollution and refloating of this cargo vessel was undertaken by three companies: Smit Salvage, Megatugs and Antipollution.
Refloating operations took place in the presence of representatives of these companies who met at the position of the shipwreck to watch procedures of lifting the aft part/section of the “Cabrera”. Amongst others, present there were the Mayor of Andros Theodosis Sousoudis as well as the Harbour Master of Andros Mr. George Sideris.
