On February 18, 2022, as RO/PAX EUROFERRY OLYMPIA travelled from Igoumenitsa to Brindisi, a fire broke out in Garage No 3 and soon spread to other areas of the ship. Tugboats, along with boats from the Greek and Italian coast guards, assisted with the passenger search & rescue and salvage operations.
The salvage operation was undertaken by SMIT Salvage who, on February 23, 2022, and in cooperation with Megatugs, towed the ship to the port of Platygiali (operated by Akarport) in Astakos, where they continued with the search & rescue and salvage operations.
Antipollution undertook decontamination and, thanks to its highly trained personnel and specialized equipment, were able to provide environmentally sound management services for the waste generated by the fire. This included: cleaning and removing the destroyed vehicles for final disposal, decontaminating the port’s dockside, decontaminating vessel’s areas, and management of the generated waste.
The total duration of cleaning and waste management operations was 4 months.
