On February 18th, 2022, while the RO/PAX EUROFERRY OLYMPIA was travelling from Igoumenitsa to Brindisi, a fire broke out at Garage No 3, which soon spread out to the remaining areas of the ship. Tug and salvage ships arrived to the area, as well as boats from the Greek and Italian coast guard, in order to assist with the passenger rescue and salvage operations.

The salvage operation was assigned by the shipowning company to SMIT Salvage which, in cooperation with Megatugs, who undertook the towing of the ship to a safe harbour. On February 23rd, 2022, the ship was towed to the port of Platygiali, operated by Akarport, in Astakos, to continue with the rescue and salvage operations.
